According to irate residents of High and Mill Streets, an Alleghany Power crew devastated trees in their neighbourhood. Contrary to previous practice, residents were not asked to fill a form specifying how they wished their trees to be trimmed. At noon, today, Town Hall clerk Amy Boyd said that a member of the Tree Committtee was on her way to discuss matters with the crew. Will she be able to reattach tree limbs? The local Ent Committee is not amused.

How do Shepherd University building projects affect the Shepherdstown area?

Are there environmental impact studies dealing with Shepherd University  construction projects? We have contacted the office of the president of that institution and on the subject.

Here is Shepherd's response,

  • Dear Ms. Castelar,

Shepherd University follows the guidelines as outlined to us by the
State of West Virginia, the Federal Government, Jefferson County, and
the HEPC (Higher Education Policy Commission).  These include but are
not limited to Army Corp of Engineers, State Historic Preservation
Office (SHPO), DEP (Department of Environmental Protection), and State
Fire Marshall Review.  The nursing building was cleared by SHPO for this
project and all other review processes were met for this construction.
I trust this information will aid you in writing your article.

    Thank you

    Ray Meeker
    Project Manager
    Shepherd University

Does this answer the question? Not quite.

The Corporation of Shepherdstown has notified the University that there is a leak somewhere in the town’s water line. The location of the leak has not been discovered yet which may result in a reduction in water pressure and a complete loss of water to the campus by this evening of Friday June 16 or Saturday, June 17. Updates will be posted to Shepherd’s Web site as they are made available. If a decision is made to close the campus on Monday, June 19, radio and television statements will be notified.  Radio and Television stations will not be notified if the campus remains open.

Robespierre of Mill Street.

Mill Street  is one of the few remaining wooded areas within the Corporation of Shepherdstown. Twenty years ago it was home to bear, deer, painted turtles, rabbits,  racoons, woodchucks, squirrels, herons, Baltimore orioles, bluebirds, Canada geese, wild turkeys, kingfisher,  Carolina wrens, cardinals, broadwing hawks, barred owls, titmice, quail, pheasant, ducks, pileated, red bellied, downy, and flicker woodpeckers, cedar waxwings, woodthrushes, azure moths, painted lady, monarch, and zebra butterflies. Stay tuned for interviews with environmentalists and activists on how construction projects  affect local fauna.
